Clean Water For All

If you were thirsty and needed a glass of water, how far would you walk for it?

Around the world, millions of people in Africa walk an average of six kilometers every single day just to collect their daily drinking water. And unlike in the U.S., the water collected in Africa often comes from unprotected rivers, lakes, ponds and watering holes. It can carry the waterborne diseases which are among the leading causes of illness and death in Africa, especially among children.

But what if you could walk for clean water – and ensure that one day, our friends in Africa won’t have to?

Walk With Embrace Relief

On May 19, 2024, you can do just that. Join Embrace Relief for our third annual H₂Ow Far Can You Walk: 5K Walk-a-Thon at Liberty State Park in Jersey City! This fun, family-friendly – and dog-friendly! – event aims to raise awareness of this critical humanitarian crisis.

By walking with us along the scenic Hudson River, you will be supporting Embrace Relief’s Clean Water Initiative and Fountains of Hope project, which are currently providing more than 900,000 people in Africa with clean water. Each of the 850-plus wells we’ve built since 2013 is creating life-saving change, improving community health and educational outcomes, empowering women and girls to achieve, and growing the local economy.

Register for Embrace Relief’s 5K Walk-a-Thon today and you can be a part of this clean water change. Together, we’ll have some fun and help people in need!

About Embrace Relief’s award-winning ‘Fountains of Hope’ program

Water wells are the solution to the clean water crisis in Africa. But it is also not so simple. For one, new water wells are expensive to build. Secondly, nearly half of all wells in sub-Saharan Africa are broken at any given time, due to a lack of maintenance and the harsh climate.

However, in 2021, Embrace Relief created the “Fountains of Hope” well reconstruction program, which provides an elegant solution to both of these problems. A well can be reconstructed for about one-third the cost of a new well, while providing the same quality and quantity of water.

Since 2021, Embrace Relief has rebuilt more than 100 Fountains of Hope, restoring the flow of water to communities who otherwise might have been abandoned. In 2023, Fountains of Hope received a Third Place “Pioneers in SDG” award from the Journalists and Writers Foundation, a UN-affiliated civil society organization, a testament to the powerful change our program is creating.
